On Turning 65 ( The Daring Side )
By Patricia Flasch
All of my life my career has taken precedence
Over all the other parts of me
I don’t mean to sound ungrateful
I am so grateful and so suited to this work as psycho-spiritual counselor
I am blessed beyond belief
Traveling all around the world
Living a simply abundant life
Sometimes delving into the creative arts
(I’ve written a book, 200 poems, learned 75 by heart,
Performed my own show, played with the Muse)
My inner artist has lived, though, in the shadow of the paying career
Now, at 65, my Muse is getting noisy
She’s popping out all over the place
“It’s time to get hip with technology”
It’s time to bring the writing, the performing, our truest expression
Out into this world, all the way out!
When I was 7, just before my dad died,
I was a cowgirl, a tap, toe and ballet dancer,
A water colorist, captain on all the sports teams
And now, at 65, I am not closing for business
I am opening, as Rumi would say, to the milk fountain inside of me
And then sharing myself with all who show up…
Over all the other parts of me
I don’t mean to sound ungrateful
I am so grateful and so suited to this work as psycho-spiritual counselor
I am blessed beyond belief
Traveling all around the world
Living a simply abundant life
Sometimes delving into the creative arts
